A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.
The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.
The above has been attributed to different people such as Alexander Tytler. Nobody seems to know where it really originated. It has been called a cynical view of Democracy. I submit it is a truthful and very sad commentary on where we are headed. I believe we are somewhere between complacency and bondage. Much closer to bondage than many realize. The government is taking more control over our lives every day.
Many people say, “Oh no, that can’t happen to us.” The fact is that it can. Just as many of the Socialists out there say that Socialism can work if only done right and of course they believe they are the ones to do it the correct way. They are just as mistaken as those of us who proclaim that we will make our country work.
Man, no matter how evolved he is, is just like any other animal. We will always try to do things the ‘easy’ way. This is a great part of what is facing us now. With over 40% of the population receiving some form of financial support from the government we are not far from another crisis. It is true that the more we get from the government the greater control the government excercises over us.
A greater and greater number of people are saying, “Why should I do anything? Uncle Sam will take care of me.” Unfortunately these people have the same right to vote as you do and what will happen to US when they are in the majority? It began a long time ago with the social programs of FDR, then LB,J then Carter and finally BHO. The more the people of the country are allowed to feed at the government trough the more complacent they become.
I believe the only, and it will be a most painful, path we can follow to save the Republic is a drastic reduction of social programs. We have hundreds of social programs from the federal government all the way down to city government. Every one of them designed to facilitate dependence on the government.
We must return to a more literal translation of the Constitution. If it isn’t spelled out there then the government shouldn’t be doing it; period; end of story!
Waiter, there is a fly in my wine!
Well you did ask for something with a little body in it!
